so, i was browsing Kinja today, and i somehow got away from oppo and Jalopnick and ended up on Gawker or another part.
and i'm looking at the comments (it was on one of the snow-storm posts) and i keeping seeing idiots saying "oh, we couldn't drive in 1/2 inch snow because its dangerous yada yada yada"
or even better: "I dont know why i crashed, my AWD suburban on 24's must have broken or something
Or the best one: "I was crawling along one day, trying to get home, and I hydroplaned ...."
yea buddy, you are definitely going to hydroplane when you are 'crawling'
so I was getting ready to rant on these guys when i noticed i wasn't on oppo or Jalop.
so, I realized this must be where the soccer moms are hanging out.
TL;DR: Make sure you are on the right website before you start to assume people are idiots
Enjoy some pics for reading this

I'd still give them winter driving advice. Safe roads mean safe people.

Yup. It's a very opposite universe around the gawker sphere...oppo and Jalopnik have the car nuts and people, jezebel has the feminists and various peoples, gawker has (I don't seriously know) people, deadspin is probably mostly sports nuts, gizmodo has the technology enthusiasts, i09 has futurists, fleshbot (if they were still with gawker) is mostly people holding something in their hand, and groupthink is a place I've never gone on. Nobody puts nite groupthink stuff probably. Oppo says nite in their respective time zones. We are great.

agreed. I think its because oppo knows that if we dont stand together, then we are screwed, with the world being as anti-car as it is.
btw, do you know any motorcycle pages? id quite like to join one of those...

Everybody's winter driving skill and experience level is different. Here in Austin, a bit of ice shuts down the city. Nobody has the skill, experience — or brains — to drive in it. Most of Texas south of Dallas doesn't have the road gear to keep the roads clear. So while I agree that there are many clueless, whiny commenters on Gawker, many people also have no clue how to safely navigate winter conditions.

oh, i totally agree.
but, if you are hit with snow in area that normally doesnt have snow, and you have never driven in snow, and your car isnt good for snow.
stay home? like dam.

You got Fleshbot but forgot Kotaku and Lifehacker? FFS, Fb isn't even in the drop down but all the rest are.

They're not so bad, they star in all the ice-crashing videos we've been watching.

Agreed. But some folks have to go to work anyway. But they leave at the same time and expect to drive the same speed. That's where the lack of brains comes in.

Whoops. Kotaku is mostly gamers, and lifehacker is mostly full of makers and needs a shot up the sleeve because lifehacker is...kinda boring compared to everything else.

Boring compared to Fleshbot, you mean. We all know your favorite Gawker site.

So a bit of background. Mgrew up in Seattle and Minnesota and went to college at Purdue. Snow driving experience? Check. In fact, I was in MSP Sunday and Monday for work and got to experience -16F and driving on the snow. Flew home to ATL last night and in to work at the airport this morning. They told us to go home at 1 and I left at 2. Took me 1.5 hrs to go 30 miles. I live in the easy driving part of town. One of my friends who lives on the north side of town left right at 1 and was still on the road at 7:30.
The roads were in worse shape here in Atlanta than MSP. The city just isn't set up for it. Now snow was forecast , but you know how that can go. We were pretty sure it was going to snow, but we have some of the best Met people in the world working for us. People went to work hoping for the best. The roads turned to ice pretty quick as well.
I didn't see too much bad driving on the way home. Things were pretty slow already and the damage was done. There was one Camaro going faster than needed and one truck that was weaving through traffic. Otherwise people were being good to one another.

Just heard from me of my co-ops and he is still fighting his way home 9 hours after I told him to leave. He lives 20 miles from the airport.

No doubt. Apparently I got very lucky with my 1.5 hr drive.
